It is 1800 and the Sant’Ignazio Instituto; orphanage, nunnery and music school for girls, is preparing for a visit by Pope Pius VII. The local bandmaster Perlina, an imperious conductor, insists on composing a piece of music but is creatively blocked. Four girls from the orchestra and the maid Teresa, all musically very talented, want to help and are stimulated by the discovery of a pianoforte in the institute to secretly work on their own compositions, unique at the time. Perlina wants nothing to do with this and makes frantic attempts to write a piece of music. However, the day of the high visit is fast approaching and he has nothing in writing yet.
