Morreti’s Sun finally shines again
Giovanni (Moretti finally back as himself) is an old director in crisis, tired and disenchanted. He is preparing a film, set in Rome in 1956, about a communist militant who must confront the most traumatic event of that year: the Soviet invasion of Hungary.
The story, of course, is a pretext to bring back to life the director’s alter ego that Michele Apicella buried in 1989 with ‘Palombella Rossa’ after giving him success as an author and actor. Since then, Moretti has not made any more films played by his alter ego. He changed his style and characters and started churning out auteur films that made him internationally successful but were also the least spontaneous and compelling of his long career. Now Giovanni/Nanni takes us back to that fictionalized autobiographical style that was the stylistic hallmark of Moretti’s early style, of his films that indeed marked an era.
Giovanni’s story thus becomes an opportunity to reflect on our sad times. First, the character of Michele and, today, Giovanni are powerful authorial devices to reflect on the present with irony and disenchantment without giving in to the lure of the market. The film has so far participated in the Cannes Film Festival and has received no less than nine nominations for the Nastri d’Argento 2023.
